A nonlinear workflow provides the flexibility to quickly and efficiently modify a design at any phase of the architectural process, with real-time results. Through parametric design and linked multiprogram models, designers can utilize the strengths of each tool separately while keeping within a larger overall framework—from massing to façade to detail to visualizations. This provides the capacity to have a process that can react quickly to changes—whether in design or detailing—that can link back and forth with design, visualization, and documentation tools (specifically Rhino, Grasshopper, Revit software, 3ds Max software, and Unreal Engine). This demonstration will move quickly through this process, showing the use of each tool along the workflow, as well as the ways to link these programs into a web of tools. It is the goal of the demonstration to illustrate the strengths, potential pitfalls, and various processes of developing a nonlinear workflow.

The course will cover the creation of a Construction Project utilizing as many Autodesk products as possible. We will start with InfraWorks 360 to demonstrate on the site selection, then utilize Map3D, Civil3D and Vehicle Tracking to build the infrastructure of the site. In parallel, we will demonstrate the use of Dynamo, Formit and Revit to build the Buildings and Structure of the site, and Plant3D, with Advance Steel to build the rest of the Plant. Also demonstrated will be Navisworks, BIM360 Glue and BIM360 Field to show a complete workflow of a project from initial concept phase to final project delivery and commissioning.

While designing a stadium, the most important thing is to make sure that every one of the seats offers a good, unobstructed view of the whole field. Architects must make sure that they optimize the view and distance from the field while also fitting in the maximum number of seats. This class will describe how to develop a Dynamo script to automate the seating bowl based on your standards, and then show how to use Project Refinery to optimize the arrangement. Further, the class will demonstrate how to export the seating bowl to Revit software, and the data to a data visualization platform like Microsoft Power BI, to visualize your design.

This panel will discuss the achievements and challenges of the successful Intercity rail project in Norway. The panel will include Building Information Modeling (BIM) experts from the fields of design, construction, and government who will all share their perspectives on this highly collaborative, fast-paced project. Intercity is a 250-plus km rail project with both new and existing right of ways passing through dozens of municipalities and multiple other jurisdictions. In each jurisdiction, there are different stakeholders and variable legal considerations for cultural, historic, environmental, social, and esthetic standards, all of which were addressed via InfraWorks 360 software representations. The project has been split into sections, each being designed by a different company or partnership, so collaboration between sections and the Rail administration has been key to their success. West Virginia Department of Transportation (WVDOT) and Transcend Spatial Solutions completed a pilot project to collect mobile LiDAR (light detection and ranging) for 281 miles of roadway in Huntington, West Virginia. The imagery and LiDAR data were collected in 5 days and processed to point clouds and corresponding video in 40 hours. Features were extracted by bringing the point clouds into InfraWorks software, where the terrain was processed, vertical features were classified, and feature modeling was used to extract features. The extracted features were loaded into a geodatabase and made accessible through WVDOT’s existing straight-line diagramming application called Road Analyzer. Other existing roadway characteristics and Highway Performance Monitoring System (HPMS)-related attributes are also available through the Road Analyzer interface. This class will outline the project objectives, approach, results, and next steps. In this class, we'll understand how to use Dynamo software to perform daily activities from a Mechanical and Electrical contractor point of view-starting from simple parameters mirroring and going to more-advanced techniques, including the use of Python scripting. The requirement of a LOD400 model for 34 kilometers of tunnel can be quite complex if you don't choose the right way. Starting from a simple Microsoft Excel file with the tunnel alignment, you'll be able to create a fully detailed design, including all the information useful for the facilities management system. Dynamo is the key when you've got to place thousands of elements based on rules and algorithms. This is a real-world applications in one of the most iconic rail projects in the Middle East

This class will be a 60-minute demonstration that uses 2 actual infrastructure projects as a backdrop showing the synergy between Civil 3D software and InfraWorks software while emphasizing using data from native Esri data sources that are needed from early stages to construction phase. The geographic information system (GIS) emphasis in the demonstration will cover traditional import, FDO connection, the display manager, and geodatabase support, but, more importantly, it will hone in on the new tools available in InfraWorks and Civil 3D as a result of the new partnership between Esri and Autodesk. In this class, the new technology will be applied to real-life project situations, including early predesign changes and challenges, with changing data during the project lifecycle. Project data for the projects will include reality capture, planimetrics, geotechnical, utilities, and transportation.

This will be a roundtable discussion to review and understand what is achievable when we apply the principles of generative design to the water industry. What does the future hold, and what are the immediate steps required to realize the potential that generative design can bring? This facilitated discussion will explore the definition of generative design, the environment it’s being applied to in this instance, the key fundamental principles, and the potential benefits it can yield.

In this discussion, I will be so bold as to make predictions as to where I believe our industry is going in the next 3 to 10 years. With advancements in generative design, software algorithms, and robotic construction, our current processes are going to be changing quite a bit. We will see more and more done by computers and machines than we have ever seen. Rather than Building Information Modeling (BIM), we are going to see Building Information Optimization. In contrast, rather than manually drawing walls, doors, and columns for what we think is a good design, we will feed the computer "rules" instructing it to give us a building’s optimal footprint, structural load capacity, and thermal performance. Things that took months will be done in a day. What does this mean for you? How do you play a part in this changing process? Come to find out how. The challenges for an owner-operator of one of the world's busiest airports are tremendous, involving multiple disciplines, sectors, and business functions. This class looks at the solutions, products, and workflows delivered in key areas—including aircraft tracking, stands management, a works approval interface, asset management integration, and supply chain model management—during a recent engagement at Heathrow Airport, London. We demonstrate how the solution, which was designed for mobile devices including Apple® iPads®, allows Heathrow access to Building Information Modeling (BIM) and other key business data in the field. It also links the aircraft and stands status to infrastructure and asset information from IBM® Maximo® and a works approval solution. From incident handling and airline management to regulatory reports and business workflows, we show how the complexities of managing airport systems can be as demanding as a running a mini-city.

Autodesk® Infrastructure Map Server software can be used with AutoCAD Map 3D software to efficiently manage and maintain assets and infrastructure without requiring a traditional tabular asset management application. This class demonstrates setting up a GIS infrastructure that incorporates Autodesk Infrastructure Map Server, AutoCAD Map 3D, and the spatial features of an Oracle® database. The system can be used not only for comprehensive asset management, but also graphically and in a geospatial environment. The class also illustrates numerous asset lifecycle management workflows for day-to-day operations, such as data capture and storage, reports, and analysis within a multiple-modules format. The class presents numerous case studies of management processes for road assets and building facilities, including field data capture of asset conditions and work order processes.

The architecture, engineering, and construction industry is facing the need to provide the best design and engineering solutions within tight deadlines. This class will show that generative design can be used for MEP (mechanical, electrical, and plumbing) design engineering. This class will use Revit 2019 software, Dynamo Visual Studio, and Project Fractal for MEP generative design. Specifically, you will discover how to create a ceiling plan via generative design, where the layout of air terminal devices and lighting devices will be automatically generated and explored. Wales, Alaska, is the most westerly inhabited village in North America. Having easy access to the site is not feasible if you should happen to forget what it looks like—not to mention that it’s covered in snow for 75% of the year. So let’s build a road over 10 miles of permafrost with the use of 12,000 acres of LiDAR (light detection and ranging) data. Using InfraWorks 360 software, we’ll work in 4D and adjust the road location over the permafrost. Then we’ll use InfraWorks 360 Hydrology to determine the watersheds and culvert locations, and size them for us. This session features InfraWorks 360 and AutoCAD Civil 3D.

Revit MEP software for electrical engineering is all about coordination. Yes, it does modeling in 3D; but the biggest benefit for electrical is not that it can model 3D lights. Rather, it's that it produces a coordinated model with the assurance that everything is circuited and documented correctly. Setting up Revit MEP for electrical can be painful. There are many pesky settings and things that just do not work the way you want them to work. This class will discuss pairing Microsoft Power BI with BIM 360 Field data to make informed corporate decisions.

This class will present a toolset for enabling and enhancing Human and Robot Collaborative for the building sector. A specific case study, “Collaborative Robotic Workbench”, developed for the Kuka Innovation Award 2018, will illustrate several techniques in generative design, communication protocols, and interfaces for enabling a human and robot collaborative building process. This workbench featured an augmented reality interface for superimposing data and dispatching tasks to the robot, a background computational engine for task distribution and path planning, and an online web platform for process visualization using Forge APIs. The class will provide an overview of the various system components and explain how they facilitated a collaborative construction process - going into particular depth on the communication between a ROS server managing the robotic process and a Forge viewer web client that enables remote monitoring of the construction process in real time.
