The design process has undergone significant changes in the last decade. Building information modeling (BIM) has revolutionized the way professionals design, plan, and manage projects. However, despite the numerous advantages of BIM, there is still untapped potential in the data generated throughout the design process. Analyzing data from Revit software and other sources can help designers make informed decisions about a design, ensuring that it meets the project's goals and objectives. Moreover, data empowers designers to explore more design options, and AI-assisted generative design tools can analyze data and provide optimized solutions. The data is stored in a centralized cloud database that's easily accessible, enabling the designers to quickly access and analyze it, making the design process more efficient. In this class, we'll identify four key phases to successfully capturing design data on projects: connection/integration, data syncing, visualization, and monitoring.

See how Model Coordination was used on the Portland International Airport (PDX) to coordinate design partners, trade partners, and general contractor as-built scans. This class will discuss the philosophy of our use, and the setup and maintenance process, as well as lessons learned along the way. The project joined Autodesk Cloud Services in January 2019 in order to handle the sheer number of team members and data that needed to be coordinated across all teams. The decision to use Model Coordination was heavily targeted toward the leadership group for both design and owner. These folks are not Revit users but are integral to the design process and direction. This platform allowed them to see the design as it developed and offered a unique lens previously unavailable. It also gave them the freedom to explore the design and investigate areas of the building with ease. The platform was used very effectively in regular coordination meetings, client meetings, and client-driven meetings.

The future of designing and making buildings is at a tipping point, and a significant paradigm shift is not far away. Net zero is acting as the catalyst for radical change, and change—enabled by the shift toward off-site manufacturing and the availability of a raft of digital technologies and tools—is happening rapidly. This talk will look at the work of WSP's digital innovation team, and consider how to adopt designing for manufacture and assembly (DfMA) approaches where economies of scale align with configurators to drive product-orientated workflows and new customer experiences. Within this workflow, kits of parts and catalogues become crucial to the success of repeatable content, while enabling individual projects to create their own identities within circular economy approaches where longevity and replacement of larger subassemblies become commonplace. The case studies we present will underline all of these aspects.

Exchanging project data between applications is a favorite problem in architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC): Offices need to manage the risk involved in undersharing and oversharing. Collaborators need to understand if they're working on the same version of a project. And data formats must be compatible. While desktop software systems are the powerhouses driving design and engineering workflows, teams need to communicate beyond their desks, often through distributed cloud interfaces that change rapidly. The software development teams for Revit software, Autodesk Forma, and Autodesk Docs have created multiple ways to address interoperability problems, and have had hundreds of hours of conversations with project clients and AEC professionals about what does and doesn't work. The most-promising methods include rapidly evolving cloud applications that change and improve constantly. This class will summarize these findings, identify the most-recent tools available to solve interoperability challenges, and look down the road to emerging methods for teams to share data.

The municipality of Brownsville, PA, boasts many historic structures, but many are in danger of being lost. Sadly, one such cluster of buildings with wonderful brick facades became unsafe, and they were demolished in 2020. But what if those buildings had been rescued and incorporated into a new development? Using digital tools like Revit software, Civil 3D software, and Twinmotion, the site along Market Street with its lost facades was used as the location for a hypothetical mixed-use development that included retail, commercial, dining, and live/work spaces. This reimagining began with a laser scan of the area fortuitously taken just months before the demolition. This survey and the subsequent project were done in partnership with municipal authorities and Autodesk. The result is a fictional redevelopment located on this very real site. Best of all, it is now included with Revit 2024 software as the new sample project! Join us for a look behind the scenes at the very "real” process used to create this "unreal” project.

The architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry is responsible for 40% of emissions globally; deep emissions reductions by 2030 are critical to mitigate the severity of global climate change. These meaningful reductions are impossible without decarbonizing the built environment and rethinking how we use materials and consume energy. In this applied case study, see how novel bio-based materials are analyzed early in design for embodied and operational carbon reductions. This project is a collaboration between Autodesk AEC Sustainability Strategy, Autodesk Research, Ecovative, Kreysler Associates, and Factory_OS, a leader in industrialized construction, building affordable homes through modular construction. The presenters will outline the analysis tools used, including Autodesk Insight, Revit Systems Analysis, and TallyCAT, to generate early design guidelines and provide directional guidance on the trade-offs between operational and embodied carbon. The presentation will demonstrate how this was used to inform the refinement of a new, productized, decarbonized, low-rise building typology.

One solution to this is the Revit Energy Analytical Model, which allows us to analyze carbon while we design our buildings. While the Revit Energy Analytical Model is an intelligent method to transform architectural models into analytical information, the setup and model view can be unintuitive, and can be impacted by modeling practices. In this session, learn how to go from developing conceptual models in Autodesk's early stage planning and design tool—Autodesk Forma—to highly detailed manufacturing design models in Revit and Inventor software. This talk will outline how Autodesk's Manufacturing Informed Design team has collaborated with the KOPE platform to create an end-to-end system that enables the design and specification of prefabricated products and systems through the industry's largest off-site market and database. This talk will demonstrate how manufacturing-led content can truly influence and validate design at an early stage by enabling a productized supply chain.

Buildings and other architectural spaces are often poorly suited to their occupants. One aspect of this is their spatial layout: It can be hard to walk from one place to another, as the visibility within or outside of a space might be limited and the acoustics can be poor. Automated spatial analysis—during generative or traditional design workflows—helps designers assess these qualities. In 2019, Autodesk Research released a Dynamo package for 2D spatial analysis, followed by one for 3D in 2021. The latter, called VASA (Voxel-based Architectural Space Analysis), takes inspiration from voxel-based environments such as Minecraft to explore architectural spaces. VASA lets Dynamo users analyze buildings spatially, enabling activities such as pathfinding, daylighting, and visibility analysis. This session will look at how Revit users can harness Dynamo and VASA to conceive and design great occupant-centered spaces, validating assumptions using concrete spatial metrics.

You may be proud of your net-zero energy buildings and carbon offsets, but have you considered the embodied carbon impact of your buildings throughout their entire lifecycles, including embodied carbon? If not, you're leaving a carbon legacy for future generations to deal with. In the presentation, we'll dive deep into the science of embodied carbon. We'll look at how it's measured through advanced technology such as Revit software, Dynamo, and Autodesk Platform Services (formerly Forge), and why it is crucial to consider. We will explore real-world examples of how embodied carbon impacts building portfolios over time, and how it can affect the planet's future. We'll also examine how considering carbon assessments at different scales (regions, cities, buildings, interiors, and products) can help investors and executives make more-informed decisions on strategies to decarbonize their property portfolios.

This session will focus on the concept of "design by availability" as a strategy to reduce carbon emissions. The study analyzes the reuse supply chain and market for projects in California. It uses data visualization to highlight the amount of wasted materials and the carbon impact of disposal. The goal was to create a better workflow to identify reusable materials and integrate this data into design software in order to promote circularity—minimizing waste while encouraging the use of renewable, recyclable resources. The study proposes to embed architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) design technology tools into the process, enabling material inventories to provide early evaluations of a project's environmental impact. Additionally, automation workflows can inform the degree to which design solutions can minimize extraction and waste in favor of sustainable materials, opening up the possibility for expanding professional services.

Due to our unique involvement in the Forma pilot program we would like to share our experience with the AECO community. The Forma-to-Revit-and-back-to-Forma workflow (via Forma Plugin) is a powerful tool for architects and designers seeking to streamline their design process. Forma provides an intuitive platform for creating complex geometries and analysis while Revit's advanced BIM tools enable designers to create detailed building models. The ability to seamlessly transfer between the two programs allows for easy collaboration and communication between team members, resulting in a more efficient and effective design process. This workflow is particularly useful for architects and designers looking to create complex designs in a fraction of the time it would take using traditional methods. By integrating the strengths of Forma and Revit, designers can create more accurate, energy efficient and detailed models, which can be used for construction and documentation purposes.

In this class, you'll learn how to use AWS Amplify to connect your Autodesk add-ins to a database and let your users exchange data. You'll also learn how to use AWS Amplify and React to host the Forge Viewer to build clients custom web dashboards with authentication for your clients. AWS Amplify is a complete solution you can use to build and host full-stack applications, letting you concentrate on app development and avoid spending time and money on server maintenance and complex admin tasks. Adding database, account authentication, file storage, and several other functions can be achieved quickly using a command line interface, which makes it very easy to start new projects.

By 2030, Norway must reduce CO2-emissions by 55% compared with the reference year of 1990. The current rehabilitation rate in Norway is between 1 and 1.4% of the total building stock, even though research shows that upgrading existing conditions is the fastest way to reduce a buildings footprint on the climate. In a step to reduce emissions, new Norwegian legislation also specifies that all buildings that are planned to be demolished must undergo a reuse mapping assessment. This has fueled a wave of innovation in the AEC sector to meet these governmental demands and promote rehabilitation as the way forward. Nordic Office of Architecture, in collaboration with Tvinn Solutions, is exploring how technology can contribute to the optimalization of rehabilitation project workflows. Several in-house case studies were used to help understand the biggest risks and frustrations associated with rehabilitation projects, develop innovative solutions for minimalizing risk, and to measure results when architects held the ability to incorporate reused elements directly in their native design environment. These solutions were focused around having digitalized the necessary building information early in the design process, semi-automatizing the modelling and data management of the existing conditions, digital workflows for the integration of donor and closed market reuse and on the reduction of construction waste through design.
