Do you want to learn how to use laser scans in Autodesk's Model Coordination? This session will cover how Miron Construction has cut this process down from weeks to a few hours. We've been using laser scans for 10+ years and have recently started performing laser scanning ourselves. Laser scanning takes a lot of time and effort, and we were missing an efficient way to use the scans in Model Coordination. Linking the laser scan into Revit software and modeling over it is not easy and creates a lot of risk when coordinating with those models. If items are modeled inaccurately, all liability falls back on our team, which is something that Miron Construction's virtual construction team wants to avoid. This session will share how we are using PointFuse to elevate our building information modeling (BIM) coordination outcomes in Model Coordination.

Many are familiar with the concept of using drones or terrestrial sensors for reality capture techniques. In this session, we will discuss how the advent of new technical advancements in imagery from satellites makes it possible to use sensors from space to develop brand-new, previously unavailable reality workflows. We're going to use satellite imagery from BlackSky satellites processed in Esri's ArcGIS Reality to create accurate scenes and 3D data sets that we can bring into InfraWorks and Civil 3D software to create an immersive product that we can use for site planning, proposals, and construction-progress monitoring. The session will start with an overview of the commercial satellite industry: We will study the different satellite constellations and explore reasons why we would pick one over the other. Then, we will show how to process satellite imagery in ArcGIS Reality. Finally, we'll show how the processed data flows into the Autodesk ecosystem and is used as authoritative data for planning.

El Corte Ingles is the largest department store chain in Europe and one of the biggest real estate owners in Spain. Within a larger digital transformation strategy, the Real Estate area has embraced BIM methodology and in 2022 has embarked on the digitization of 20+ of their malls. Every year, a substantial investment is made in order to bring their assets up to the highest building management standards. BIM models provide now a single, up-to-date and reliable source to study and plan yearly investment and designs. In this case study we will take an in-depth look at our approach which has enabled us to model the existing assets in some 20+ centers and our biggest logistic platform in less than a year, taking advantage of point clouds and 360° pictures. We will showcase the hits and misses of this journey, where we have gone from zero BIM knowledge to managing more than 2.5M m2, including the transformation of 60K+ unique furniture items to Revit families.

Carleton Immersive Media Studio (CIMS) has been involved in the 3D modeling of judicial evidence for homicide cases since 2015. The lab has refined its modeling workflows based on the established use of reality capture (photogrammetry) and BIM (Building Information Modeling) to model artifacts and buildings. Working with the coroner’s office, CIMS has incorporated newer forms of 3D modeling and real-time rendering to establish a standard for displaying digital representations of photographic evidence in a courtroom setting. In this class, we’ll cover our modeling process, starting with analyzing evidence to presenting the data in a user-friendly format. Utilizing Maya software, we’ll model a series of anatomical base meshes that we’ll then manipulate to show inflicted injuries. Next, we’ll texture map the models in Mudbox using photos as reference. Finally, we’ll combine the pieces in Unreal Engine using a template. The addition of blueprints and widgets complete the final product.

Industrial piping design tools such as AutoCAD Plant 3D software are now sophisticated and mature tools in many capacities across the specification-driven, P&ID-validated, data-driven fronts. However, other disciplines are engaging with more-contemporary modes of design, communication speed, and risk reduction. This paper will discuss how complimentary computational-design processes can harness power from other disciplines such as 3D geometric dimensioning and tolerancing in product design, mesh backdrops originating from reality capture processes, intelligent AutoCAD-Plant-3D-to-Revit interoperations through APIs, through to the creation of specifications from legacy data fragments for seamless piping component file (PCF) imports.

The scan-to-BIM (Building Information Modeling) workflow has enabled architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) professionals to efficiently capture, design, and model the as-built environment. But what if we could modify and further automate this process to boost efficiency and insight? This session will be looking at a more refined and automated application of the scan-to-BIM workflow by incorporating laser scanning and point-cloud extraction technologies, as well as creating photorealistic visualizations using scanned data and the design model for more-informed, insightful decision making by conveying highly accurate and realistic design intent.

Lighting design has always been a difficult discipline to communicate; it’s a challenge for clients and project teams to produce the lighting design in their mind’s eye. This is especially applicable with refurbishment of cultural arts and heritage projects, where the complexity and intricacy of such internal spaces makes the way in which light interacts with surfaces and finishes particularly difficult to convey. From the outset, we've been keen advocates of using visualization tools, such as 3ds Max software, to demonstrate the lighting approach with clarity and photometric accuracy, using a range of 3D mediums—from traditional “static” images to in-house developed interactive tools and experimentation in virtual reality (VR) to “show and tell.” In this session, we’ll provide an overview of these visualization processes through selected case studies of our heritage projects for the likes of Historic Royal Palaces UK, as well as University of Cambridge and University of Oxford.

A cross-industry technology fusion! We used Autodesk Generative Design software to create an adaptive connector bracket for robot-operated 3D scans of ancient structures. ReCap software and Dynamo helped us study traditional construction methods and enrich our restoration efforts. This report covers our process in Autodesk Fusion 360 software, including entering design parameters and extracting constraints from the historical site. It explains how we turned the bracket's requirements into criteria for rapid iteration and selection, quickly finding the best solution. It also explains how ReCap processed robot-collected point cloud data to investigate architectural principles and features of ancient buildings in Southern China. Finally, it describes how Dynamo converted these insights into automated building information modeling (BIM) scripting, bridging historical knowledge with modern technology for efficient restoration practices.

This session will look at how Boustead Projects implements processes for monitoring and tracking prefabricated elements. It involves overseeing design approval before fabrication, as well as the real-time tracking of asset location and status with the use of QR codes. This real-time tracking facilitates the generation of accurate status reports for project stakeholders. For mechanical and electrical equipment required for testing and commissioning (T&C), each named asset is tagged with its T&C status, which is then documented in the intelligent model data. This data includes parameter values like equipment site label, site location, and system description, which are used for the respective unit on-site. Internally, Boustead Projects uses Assets to track the lidar scanning statuses based on rooms per level, keeping management informed about the progress of lidar scanning activities.

The quality of a scan-to-BIM (Building Information Modeling) model can vary, depending on the surveyor, instrument used, field conditions, and especially the requirements specified. There are, however, no industry standards templates available to follow. This class will focus on the essentials for developing a scan-to-BIM execution plan, starting from providing and clarifying scope of work to defining LOD requirements. There are a lot of potential risks that we need to identify and highlight when picking up a scan-to-BIM job. We will discuss some of these cases with project examples. Basic tools like Revit software, ReCap software, and Navisworks software can help us through this process of visualizing model mistakes and getting a quality product. We will learn several tips that can assist us while facing the quality control of a model replicated from a point cloud. Those tips will also help us locate where the focus should go in each case.

In the first part of this session, we will create an associative parametric model to introduce fundamental concepts that underpin computational design while exploring visual programming in Dynamo software. The model will be enhanced by parameters retrieved from AutoCAD software and Civil 3D objects. We will show how to organize and export a point cloud representing the landform and link into Civil 3D. There we will integrate this landform as a triangulated irregular network (TIN) model into the model of the existing environment and perform several analyses, including grading, stormwater, and cut/fill balance. Based on this analysis, we will optimize the parametric model. As the model is dynamically linked, we can check the improvement immediately in Civil 3D and iterate the process easily. We will also show how to use Dynamo to link landforms created by designers as NURBS with TIN surfaces that engineers can use.
