3D printing has the ability to empower clinicians. This class will focus on the benefits of using or starting a hospital-based 3D design and printing program to help design new training models and assist with improving patient care. This session features Fusion 360.

This session will showcase how BHI implemented the Matterport and Autodesk Construction Cloud integration in a master planning project for a hospital in partnership with African Mission Healthcare (AMH) to transform its traditional construction workflows with the goal of enhancing collaboration, productivity, project management, and sustainability throughout the lifecycle of development. From capturing detailed 3D scans with Matterport's digital-twin platform to streamlining documentation and issue tracking via Autodesk's robust construction project management solution, attendees will learn about the strategic advantages of this integration.

This session details developing a digital twin for the healthcare market, specifically for operating theatres where we try to combine the medical and technical world to improve patient safety and reduce surgical site infection which leads to mortality. Creating this digital twin is a sum of data analytics, CFD simulations, and the use of visualisation tools such as VR and AR. In practise, this leads to a better design process and lifecycle of the OR that guarantees the optimal safety for the patient. We are still in a development phase and using the following Autodesk products: Revit, Fusion 360, CFD, 3ds Max and Interactive.

The NBBJ healthcare practice is currently using Simulation CFD 360 software to study patient comfort in healthcare design. This class will show examples of the work, and we will examine analysis of the results of this work. We will examine in-depth studies of natural ventilation, infection control, and patient comfort, and we will discuss methods and results. We will also look at additional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) studies to investigate the use of Simulation CFD 360 software in the study of energy-saving concepts as they relate to healthcare design and the design of other Sustainable Design Solutions.

“Learning to fly by watching the birds was like learning magic by watching a magician.” So said Orville Wright. In transitioning to Building Information Modeling (BIM), the industry has learned by doing, from the successes to the missed opportunities. This class will examine best practices and project insights from CannonDesign’s Healthcare Group as the firm shifted from AutoCAD software to Revit software. Using large hospital projects as case studies, the class will explore strategies of keeping projects on track through complex multiphase, multiyear design and construction. In order to keep projects on track, the use of BIM has become a critical workflow. This transformation sparked conversation around the liability of sharing models. What can architects, owners, and contractors do differently from the start? By examining early decision-making, the BIM(s) can begin to address successful outcomes years before the start of construction. However, strategies may not turn out as planned and teams should evolve and adopt modeling decisions.

The research, design engineering, and development of a wireless ambulatory Electroencephalogram (EEG ) headset that utilises Brain Computer Interface (BCI) and Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) presents a wide range of complex requirements. The team responsible for developing this wireless ambulatory EEG headset is focusing on making the device suitable for patient-managed neurorehabilitation within community (at homes or community centres). Unlike existing commercial EEG headsets, this would be the first device created particularly for unassisted (nonprofessional) usage by patients (or their caregivers) with restricted motor function or with chronic pain. These conditions may be the result of spinal cord injury and/or stroke. This approach provides benefits not only to Healthcare providers (such as occupational therapists) in terms of resource allocation, but also to patients and caregivers by providing access to device that can be used in familiar surroundings and at times that suit. The main challenges that benefit from the application of Fusion 360, generative design, and ReCap are: 1) developing form and structures that are adaptable to range of head sizes and geometries; 2) developing a structure that optimises the location and placement of electrodes; 3) reduction of material usage of key headset components; 4) influences the design with the aim of enhancing comfort, functionality, durability, and interaction. The demonstration will show examples of concept development of the device, ranging from digital to physical test beds that test the interaction between a variety of heads, mechanical properties of the headsets and electrodes. Traditional and rapid prototyping processes have been used throughout the development and where appropriate, these have been tested and evaluated using human factors methods and tools. The interaction and placement of the device is critical to the rehabilitation of the patient. Therefore, the device has to intuitive to use and reliable throughout its application. It is also expected that the device would be used by more than one patient, therefore it has to be easily maintained and serviced. The project is aligned with Engineering and Physical Science Research Council's delivery plan in the area of improving prevention and public health. Since 2011 the firm HOK has been using a system to implement a minimum scope of building information modeling for all projects. HOK refers to this system internally as "BIM [Building Information Modeling] Certified." On some projects, HOK's Design and Engineering Teams are able to go far beyond BIM Certified in the pursuit of game-changing process improvement. In this class attendees will get an in-depth look at the inner workings of the David H. Koch Center, a new ambulatory care center for New York-Presbyterian Healthcare System. We will explore the successes and challenges of an integrated team that consists of 3 architecture firms, various modeling managers from trade partners, and multiple cloud-based approaches to BIM data management.

This class will present case studies of inventive Building Information Modeling (BIM) approaches adopted by 2 very different facility owners. Each one pushed beyond incremental BIM adoption to rethink workflows, develop BIM object libraries, and transform project processes. See results of their efforts presented from theoretical and practical perspectives. A large healthcare facilities owner integrates BIM libraries and standards throughout the project lifecycle. Their BIM library objects embody design requirements; data management protocols; local/global best practice standards to improve reliability and efficiency of BIM for design, delivery, and facility management with support; and additional capabilities such as 3D stereoscopic viewing, way-finding, and seamless data-sharing with facilities management (FM) applications. An international developer/operator shifts the focus of BIM organization from component-type hierarchies to elements representing installation and construction processes as performed on site, informing better cost and prefabrication analysis.

Carolinas HealthCare System will review strategic implementation of Building Information Modeling (BIM) from project inception to facilities management. We’ll then explore the benefits of project processes, such as multiteam member collaboration, virtual coordination, and owner BIM standards that help minimize project risk. The owner team will also describe their use of BIM during facilities management, which includes space management, asset management, and virtual documentation. Carolinas HealthCare System will conclude with the BIM program lessons learned and return on investment of their BIM to FIM (forensic information modeling) implementation. A prefabrication strategy allows for the practice of lean concepts, while delivering a successful project. Prefabrication of MEP systems has been used in our industry for some time. A lot of the same benefits are realized in prefabricating architectural building elements. Various projects types fit the mold for prefabrication, including hospitals, institutions, hotels, and industrial facilities. All of these types of projects have something in common: highly-repetitive building components and systems. By incorporating a prefabrication strategy, a number of benefits are achievable, including reducing material handling, construction waste, delivery impacts to a congested site, and schedule. In addition, the quality of work is increased and safety is improved due to the controlled working environment. This class focuses on a recently completed healthcare project in which prefabrication was used and also highlights the challenges that were overcome to deliver a successful project.
