In this round-table discussion we will briefly give an overview of the Autodesk, Inc., engagement in the various industry consortia and the existing interfaces for the process plant industry and the oil and gas industry. We would like to learn which interfaces and data formats you're using when you exchange PIDs, line lists, bills of materials, 3D piping, steel, and equipment models with all the associated data. Which interface are you using to receive data from FEED (front end engineering design) and to hand over to stress calculation, project management, and procurement system? Which standards are useful, which have obstacles? What can Autodesk and other software vendors do to enable a better collaboration? Which industry activities and standards should we support? This class will cover the combination of AutoCAD Civil 3D software, Revit software, AutoCAD Plant 3D software, and reality computing. Years of practice with 3D scanning and 3D modeling in the oil and gas industry have yielded applicable workflows and submittal products for building. The challenges of working in the petrochemical field have helped identify pitfalls that we can now avoid in today's reality capture and Building Information Modeling (BIM) construction tasks. This class will show that the capture of the data is not what's important; the Reality Solutions that are created from the data are what provide the most value.

We will explore some high-level challenges facing the oil and gas industry, how operators are looking to capitalize on a data-centric approach through technology to improve project performance. We’ll present a case study from a megaproject demonstrating how capitalizing on 3D models and mobile field devices led to significant efficiency and productivity improvements to deliver client outcomes. In this class, you learn about a proven oil and gas industry workflow using Plant Design Suite. We start with P&IDs and go through creating plant design models using all of the components within the Plant Design Suite Ultimate edition. We also cover how to incorporate Inventor® software models into your design.

Large process-plant refurbishments present a host of unique problems to engineers tasked with documenting the existing as-built conditions. New technologies such as ReCap Pro software, automated feature extraction, and others can result in a faster, more accurate deliverable, but engineers need to fully understand the workflow changes that these technologies require. This class, taught by a panel of experts in plant workflows, will highlight several new technologies, such as ReCap Pro software, and it will show you the ways to integrate these technologies into a plant scanning and modeling project.

Between 2012 and 2013, Autodesk Brazil developed content for Petrobras, which is one of the most well-known oil companies in the world. In Brazil, it is responsible for a large portion of exploration and production and almost all of the refining activities, creating and impacting directly a huge ecosystem of engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) projects; equipment manufacturers; and construction companies. In this class, we go through the process of creating a new P&ID library and the 3D specs for this specific ecosystem. We discuss best practices and share lessons we learned. A Petrobras representative will be present to describe how Plant Design Suite fits into their business.

This class will cover the basics of finite element analysis (FEA) and explore examples (including linear stress, modal-to-heat transfer, and dynamic simulations) in order to gain additional insight and improve product design for automotive, oil and gas, and industrial machinery industries.

The simulation will cover the setup of a rotational symmetric nonlinear static simulation with a nonlinear material model, a hyperelastic model, or a plastic elastic model. The sealing application will have several parts made from nonlinear polymeric materials where it’s essential to have a good set of material data, and the presentation will show examples of this. The different parts in the application will have multiple contact areas where it’s important to select the correct face-to-face setup for friction, penetration, and stabilization of the contact. The simulation will also show how to use multiple subcases to facilitate additional loading with a temperature increase and a hydraulic pressure buildup. This simulation will give a good impression of the initial deformation of the loaded parts.

Saipem is a large, international turnkey contractor in the oil and gas industry. One of the main problems the firm faced was the complex communication between projects’ stakeholders and the need for harmonizing data independently by the software used. In the past years, several initiatives were implemented to overcome these limitations trying to save time and facilitate the decision-making process, but no efficient solution was found. With the Forge platform the game is changing! A “data-centered BIM (Building Information Modeling) dashboard” has been implemented to aggregate data coming from different sources (SmartPlant Foundation, Oracle, Navisworks, and so on) and present them in the model context. During this session, we will present the benefits of the implemented solution, where BIM has been introduced in traditional workflows, with particular emphasis on how the new tool helps Saipem managers, and discipline leads make quicker decisions, improving project delivery quality, while cloud technology provides access from any device.

The fast-paced design/build oil and gas industry has typically used one Civil software for producing civil engineering 3D models & drawings, and a different one for producing steel fabrication 3D models & drawings. This session will present a mid-sized EPCM’s experience-based case for using only Advance Steel to successfully produce both. The presentation will describe the business case for the decision, the transition process, lessons learned, and recommended path for success.

Approximately 200 billion cubic meters of gas are flared or vented globally each year, of which the United States is a significant contributor. Obantarla’s mission is to mitigate methane and CO2 emissions by replacing flares with systems that produce economically viable, low-carbon chemical products. At scale, Obantarla’s chemical-processing technology will significantly reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and energy consumption from the domestic upstream oil and gas sector. Obantarla is a rapidly growing small group of engineers from diverse backgrounds. The firm also draws on industry partners to help design and specify parts of its chemical reactor. During its startup phase and subsequent expansion, Obantarla has greatly benefitted from using Vault software to manage CAD files and drawings, as well as requirement documents. Furthermore, the generative design tools available in Autodesk Fusion 360 software have allowed for rapid design iterations of complex custom parts for additive manufacturing.

For many within the oil and gas sector, being able to track and store asset data is paramount in calculating and verifying the maximum operating pressures (MOP) of pipeline infrastructure. This class defines how AutoCAD Plant 3D software can be used to build a facility model to house specific asset data and then use that data to calculate MOP information for a given segment of the facility piping or for the facility as a whole. This data set can then be used for regulatory audits and compliance assurance. Once a site model has been completed, it can then be used for future design changes and infrastructure management.

Every day 14 people die in job-related accidents in the United States. Safety is the top concern of any process plant operation. Using ReCap Pro software, Navisworks software, and AutoCAD Plant 3D software from the Architecture, Engineering & Construction Collection, Environmental Intellect (Ei) has increased worker safety by minimizing time in the field in harsh and dangerous environments. The following downstream benefits have been realized by using these integrated, intelligent solutions: evergreen P&IDs; better management of change (MOC); more-informed process hazard analysis (PHA); and improved process safety management (PSM). We will present how these and other benefits were successfully achieved at several oil refineries, chemical plants, and other industrial process facilities within the last 18 months.

This class will discuss and present the smart way to use Revit software and Dynamo software for underground utilities design. This design process, especially for oil and gas plants, is in a constant state of change; hence, it is necessary to find a way to save hours of tedious work. We can achieve this goal by developing "smart" families able to move and adapt according to calculation, simultaneously respecting design and clients' standards. We can synchronize the families' data with the hydraulic calculation by using Dynamo to connect the calculation report to the model with a simple "run." In this way, the pipes routing gets updated, and with this, all quantities and drawings, reducing considerably the time related to these activities.

DEXPI is the German industry initiative to support and promote the ISO 15926 standard for plant data transfer, and it has reached a major milestone: the definition of standard specification covering a complete piping and instrumentation diagram (P&ID). Autodesk, Inc., developed a proof-of-concept application for AutoCAD P&ID software to import/export P&ID data fully implementing this DEXPI specification. In this class, we will illustrate challenges and opportunities of implementing a generic standard for use with industry data and workflows, and we’ll try to answer the following questions: Can one use the current ISO 15926 specification to exchange high-quality data for P&ID data? What is the difference between DEXPI and ISO15926 standard? How are these activities related to the IFC and Open BIM Standards? This session features AutoCAD P&ID.

Saipem is a large, international turnkey contractor in the Oil & Gas Industry. Construction department always faced problems regarding the real status of projects (in home office) and the constructability (on site), the integration between the 3D model and the data available was often outdated and completely disordered. The game is changing now: the use of Forge Platform allows Saipem to aggregate BIG Data from different sources (SmartPlant 3D, Tekla, Oracle, Navisworks and others) to analyze them (Power BI) and to get an updated dataset of information applying a full BIM approach. During the class the audience will be shown, benefits of the implemented solution compared with previously used ones, with a focus on feasibility, work front analysis, progress measurement, accounting and mechanical completion handling.

We will present the adoption by Maire Tecnimont, an oil and gas international player, illustrating all the steps necessary to design and build a cloud-based application. This class will share best practices and tips for setting up a powerful project dashboard. We’ll showcase how to bring together data from different sources (Oracle, third-party applications, and different 3D-model formats), taking advantage of connection with BIM 360 software. In conclusion, we’ll use several examples to discuss the benefits gained from using Forge technology to improve analysis and the decision-making process across our company.

There is no better industry sector for achieving operational excellence than downstream oil and gas (refining and chemicals). The myriad of operational challenges these plants face—such as the sheer number of workers, the hazards of the processes, and the high operational costs—makes this industry an ideal test bed for tech innovation. Although many of AutoCAD software’s solutions are perfectly optimized for the construction and design phase of a project in these industries, the challenge in industry is how do owners and operators utilize these complex models, data, and information in the real world? Through this training, the presenter will share what Environmental Intellect (Ei) is doing to merge the construction phase of the project with the operations phase of owner-operator handoff, and how we’re capitalizing on advanced technologies to deliver truly virtual operations for forward-thinking customers in heavy industries.
