Create list of insertion points – Exercise

In this exercise, we will define the insertion points for the window pattern.

Switch over to Revit.
In the “Architecture” ribbon, click the “Wall” tool.
Draw a wall roughly 50’ long. Select any wall type as long as it is not a curtain wall.
Switch back to Dynamo.
In the Revit section of the node library, click the “Selection” category and click the “Select Model Element” node to place it in your script.
Click the “Select” button then switch back to Revit and click the wall you just created.
The “Select Model Element” node should now be gray and contain a number next to the “Element” heading, like the example below.

Click Revit in the node library then click the “Element” category. Scroll down and click the “Elements” subcategory. Click the GetLocation node to add it to your script.
Connect the output from the “Select Model Element” node to the GetLocation node’s input.
Hover over the lower right-hand corner of the GetLocation node. You should see a line listed in the preview.
Click the Geometry in the node library then click the “Curves” category and the “Curve” subcategory. Scroll to the end of the list and click the StartPoint node to add it to your script.
Connect the “Geometry” output from the Element.GetLocation node to the “curve” input of the Curve.StartPoint node.

In the Curves section of the Curve category in the node library, select the PointsAtSegmentLengthFromPoint node. If you have trouble finding it, just type the node name in the node library search bar.
Connect the output from the Element.GetLocation node to the “curve” input.
Connect the output from the Curve.StartPoint node to the “point” input.
Type “slider” in the node search bar and click the Number Slider to add it to your script.
Connect the output from the Number Slider to the “segmentLength” input. Move the slider to a number between 4 and 6.
Type “watch” in the node library search bar. Click the Watch node in the results list to add it to your script.
Connect the output from the Curve.PointsAtSegmentLengthFromPoint node to the Watch node.
Move the slider in the Number Slider and observe how the list of points changes.

The points generated by the Curve.PointsAtSegmentLengthFromPoint all have a Z Value of 0. Since you are inserting windows, we want the Z value to be 3 feet.
In the node library, click the Geometry section then click the “Abstract” category then the “Vector” subcategory. Click the “ByCoordinates (x, y, z) node to add it to your script.
Double click an empty area in the Dynamo workspace to create a Code Block.
Enter “3” in the Code Block followed by a semi-colon.
Connect the output from the Code Block to the “Z” input of the Vector.ByCoordinates node.
In the node library, click the “Points” category of the Geometry section. Click the “Point” subcategory then click the Add node to add it to your script.
Connect the output from the Vector.ByCoordinates node to the “vectorToAdd” input of the Point.Add node.
Connect the output from the Curve.PointsAtSegmentLengthFromPoint node to the “point” input of the Point.Add node.
Connect the output from the Point.Add node to the Watch node from the previous task. Confirm that the Z values listed in the list of points are now set to 3.

Pick a spot in the upper left of the Dynamo workspace and click and hold the left mouse button.
Drag the selection window to the lower right-hand corner to select all of the nodes.
Right-click and click the “Create Group” option.
Double click the group title and type “Define Insertion Points”.
Right-click the group and select a new color
In the menu bar, click Save to save your Dynamo script file.
