Define the design phase

In the previous modules, you developed a mock BIM project in which your organization is involved. You have created teams, a project structure, and a BIM strategy and have developed a project model.  

In this module, you are studying the various phases of an AECO BIM project. 

The design or architectural/engineering (AE) phase involves the early stages of the project, including the early pre-design and conceptual design stages through to the design development, detail design, and construction documentation stages. It primarily involves the architectural team and the various engineering teams, as well as some of the specialists. 

Consider how you and your organization relate to this phase. If this is the primary phase you are involved with, examine how your organization handles this phase. Use a critical eye for this inspection to determine how well prepared you are for the project lifecycle of BIM. 

If this is NOT the primary phase for your organization, use your imagination by considering members you know who belong to this phase to evaluate their adaptation of such BIM aspects. Of course, you would be looking from the outside in. 

Do not be too critical of such evaluations – let the criticism be constructive. Rome was not built in a day – with or without BIM!
