The Breakdown module of the Protector allows for determining which pipes in a hydraulic network need to be closed during the event of a pipe break. A Breakdown simulation accurately identifies pipes that can and should be closed in order to isolate a pipe element from the rest of the water system.
This example simulated a broken pipeline in the network to determine the affected facilities and closable valves, to isolate the broken pipe.
- Double-click the desired project .aprx file to open ArcGIS Pro.
- Click the InfoWater Pro tab to open the InfoWater Pro ribbon.
- In the Project panel, click Initialize.
Start by running a simulation for the current scenario:
- On the InfoWater Pro ribbon, in the Analysis panel, click Run to open the Run Manager.
- Click Run to run the simulation and create an output for the current scenario.
- Close the Run Manager.
To access the Protector:
- On the ribbon, in the Project panel, click Apps.
- From the Apps Manager, select Protector.
- Click Run.
- In the Protector app, switch to the Breakdown tab.
- Enter a Source Pipe Location of 2852.
Pipe 2852 was previously identified by the Protector Isolation module.
- Under Closable Devices, enable both Include Active Valves and Include Active Pumps.
Next, search for closable pipes on a selection or a domain:
- Under Closable Pipes, make sure that Domain is selected.
- Click Edit Domain to open the Domain Manager, to select the closable pipes.
- In the Domain Manager, under Element Source, select Selection Set.
- Use the drop-down to select the CLOSABLE_PIPES selection set.
The CLOSABLE_PIPES selection set contains all pipes with closable valves.
- Click Add.
- Click Close to exit the Domain Manager.
- Under Result Selection Set, use the Affected Facilities drop-down to select AFFECTED_FACILITIES.
Affected facilities are all isolated pipelines due to the broken pipe.
- Enable Include Isolated Area by Connectivity Search.
- In the Closed Facilities drop-down, select CLOSED_FACILITIES.
This selection set was previously created by a Protector Isolation run.
The Breakdown simulation is now ready to be run:
- In the Protector, click Run.
- Once the simulation is complete, in the model, the source location of pipe 2852 is shown in yellow, the affected facilities appear red, and the closed facilities are gray.
- In the Isolation tab, use the Color on Map settings to change these colors, if desired.
- Click Purge Water to calculate the volume of water needed to purge the affected areas.
- Click OK to close the Purge Volume dialog.
- Click Close to exit the Protector.
