Create angular structures and cantilevered edges using 3D Sketch mode in Forma.
Transcript
00:03
In Forma, you can easily create angular structures and cantilevered edges.
00:08
For this exercise, two identical triangular buildings have been placed within a site—perhaps with space for some service parking
00:17
near one and gardens adjacent to the other.
00:20
Now, it is time to cantilever the walls and give the roof some angles.
00:25
There are two ways to achieve this: the Tilt Face tool and the Move tool.
00:30
Tilt Face is a powerful tool that allows you to tilt edges while keeping the face of your building planar and the adjacent walls vertical.
00:38
To use it, select the face of the façade and then from the Design toolbar, click the Tilt Face tool.
00:44
Or, you can use the keyboard shortcut TF.
00:48
You can see that this tool’s widget has a few important components.
00:52
The first component is the grip with no dimensions on it,
00:55
which you can use to identify the roof line from where the structure pivots.
00:60
This edge remains at its current elevation.
01:03
The part of the widget with the arrows and the dimension box should be placed where you want to tilt the roof.
01:09
By using the Tilt Face tool, you can achieve an angled facade while keeping the surrounding faces vertical,
01:15
making it highly useful for any plan.
01:18
The next step is to move more edges in order to cantilever the walls to create more dynamic angles.
01:25
First, select the edge at the top of the façade you want to edit,
01:28
and then from the Design toolbar, click Move.
01:31
Or, you can use the keyboard shortcut M.
01:34
Keep in mind that if your building’s façade is rectangular, moving an edge to tilt the façade is usually the best way to do it.
01:41
Due to the various angles involved, the world axes, also called the global axes,
01:47
might not be as helpful.
01:48
However, keep in mind that the 3D Sketch tool provides a temporary perpendicular axis from the selected edge,
01:55
serving as a useful guide to give you the angle dimensions you need.
01:59
When using the Move tool, you can create non-planar faces,
02:03
but be aware they appear smooth until you hover the cursor over them.
02:07
Right-click the dashed edge and select Facet Smooth Faces.
02:12
This separates the facets into independent triangular faces.
02:17
You can reverse this action by simply selecting the Smooth Selected Edge option.
