Section views show a vertical slice through the building.
00:07
They're useful for showing the vertical orientation of the building
00:10
and also how the structure will work.
00:13
The components being cut by the section
00:15
are often shown in bold line work or with a solid fill.
00:19
And the components that are beyond the cut line are
00:21
shown in a lighter line work to represent their elevation.
00:26
So first from the project browser, I'll open the ground floor floor plan view.
00:32
And now to create a section,
00:34
we'll first go to the view ribbon tab
00:36
and from the create panel, we can click the section tool.
00:40
Now we need to draw a line along which we want the section to cut through the model.
00:44
So I'll start by clicking at the top outside the building here.
00:48
And now we'll draw this line down through the stairs
00:51
and click on the opposite side outside the building.
00:55
And now we can see that we have that section line drawn in the plan view.
00:59
Looking at the project browser,
01:00
we can see that we now have a group for section views.
01:03
If I expand this, we can see that we have section one
01:06
which is the view that we've just created.
01:09
So
01:09
we'll double click to open this view.
01:12
Now,
01:13
we can see that section view being cut through the entire height of
01:16
the building from the ground floor up to the top of core level,
01:19
cutting through the stairs that we drew the section line through.
01:23
If we zoom in a little, we can see the bolder,
01:25
thicker lines of the walls and floors that have been cut by the section
01:28
and the thinner lines of the objects beyond which are shown in elevation.
01:33
I'll come down to the view control bar here
01:35
and we'll change the detail level setting from medium to course.
01:40
And this will enable the coarse scale
01:42
graphics to be displayed on the system families
01:44
as it is defined in their type properties
01:47
to show this. I'll select the floor here and now from the properties palette,
01:51
I'll click edit type
01:53
and in the type properties here,
01:54
we can see that we have the parameter for the coarse scale fill pattern,
01:58
which is set to be a solid fill.
02:00
And beneath this, the coarse scale fill color
02:03
which is set to be the dark gray.
02:05
And hence in the view here, we can see we have the dark gray solid fill on our floors.
02:10
I'll click cancel to close the tight properties and not make any changes.
02:15
And now to show the correlation between the section view and the section marker,
02:19
we'll tell the views.
02:20
But before we do that
02:22
we'll go to the exterior view tab here and we'll just close that
02:25
down so that we have just a plan on the section view tabs.
02:29
Now we'll go to the view ribbon tab
02:31
and on the windows panel here, we'll click tile views.
02:36
And now we can see that we have both the section and plan visible on the screen.
02:40
I'll adjust a split here so that we show more of the section than the plan.
02:44
And now from the navigation bar,
02:46
we'll click on zoom all to fit
02:48
so that we can see both views in their entirety.
02:52
Looking at the section lining plan,
02:54
we can see it cutting through the building and through
02:56
the stairs here that we can see in the section view
03:01
and looking at the corridor here, we can see a door which again
03:04
in the section view is here in elevation
03:07
and now in the middle of the building here,
03:09
we can see the furniture and the internal doors
03:11
here which again we can see in the view.
03:14
And finally at the top of the building here, we can see the staircase
03:18
and in the view here,
03:18
we can see that stair tower going all the way up through the building.
03:23
And when we create a section for you,
03:25
it looks in a specific direction depending on the direction that we drew the line in.
03:31
So if I select the section view in the plan here,
03:33
you can see the blue dash line here representing the extent of the section
03:38
near the top of the section. We can see the flip controls here, which if I click on,
03:43
we can see it change direction. And now in the view, it's looking at the back wall,
03:48
which means that if we do create a section and it's looking in the wrong direction,
03:52
we can easily use the flip controls
03:54
to make it look in the direction that we want.
