    Description

As a first step, we established 10 project performance indicators and asked people across 54 projects to give us their input. The performance indicators measured the BIM implementation maturity for the projects at a quarterly basis. These performance indicators were developed keeping the ISO19650 -1 and 2 standards, and the digital construction targets of Royal BAM Group in mind. A survey based on the performance indicators was sent out to each project team. The recipients included a mix of people from different departments. We surveyed people in different roles such as project and design managers, project superintendents, estimators, planners, site personnel and more, about their understanding on the level of BIM implementation with respect to each of the performance indicators. By doing this we were able to measure both hard and soft data. The hard data included items such as different BIM applications which were being used on a project, the project’s exchange information requirements, etc. and the soft data included areas such as training and knowledge requirements, and other items that influence the human performance on site.

    Key Learnings

    • Develop, evangelise, and effectively use performance indicators to measure maturity level of BIM implementations at a group level that includes many operating companies
    • Measure the factors that influence BIM implementation against set targets during different phases of a project at regular intervals, and understand the importance of considering the human factor while measuring the performance indicators
    • Process information coming from the surveys and then draw useful insights from the data
    • Convert insights into practical day-to-day improvements, including topics such as training, learning and development, and people management
