Fusion 360 software is not like other CAD tools when it comes to positioning components in an assembly. There are no mates here. Fusion 360 has a different model for putting components together. It uses Joints to both position components and describe their motion. This class will help you to make sense of Joints in Fusion 360. Starting with the foundational concepts of assembly, degrees of freedom, positioning, and motion, we will progress into the deeper topics of flexible subassemblies, the behavior of grounded components, and so on. We will describe the various joint types that can be used in your model, and scenarios where they are applicable. We will attempt to demystify assembly modeling in Fusion 360. In this class, we examine substation assemblies and models for a utility. We also look into the lifecycle for substation parts in Vault Professional software. We cover the use of Items to keep track of information, such as purchase price, basic impulse level (BIL), operating voltage, specification information, and more. We discuss how to work in Inventor software and how to use the released bias or non-released bias to an assembly for insertion into your model. Finally, we examine how to keep track of legacy designs and greenfield designs in a standard format.

In road design, there are lots of cases where road elements vary a lot. And the typical way of introducing different road elements in the section is to design an assembly for each section you need. Road designers will arrive to a list of road sections that burden them with managing each assembly. This consumes more time that should be used in designing. In this class, you'll learn how to use protocol decision-making subassembly that will help designers create a "smart assembly” that has an algorithm that inserts, removes, modifies, or merges road elements by means of parametric design. This will change our way of road modeling altogether. Creating a massive list of sections that are difficult to manage will be a thing of the past. Building a smart assembly will improve efficiency in modeling complex road sections. And it will ease designers from managing a massive list of assemblies and improve their workflows in road modeling, leading to a more sustainable and efficient workflow.

Customers are building bigger, better, and more-complex designs. These models not only take a very long time to open, but they are also cumbersome to view, manipulate, and work with. The performance and capacity ramifications are significant, and ultimately lead to significant loss in productivity and affect overall user experience. Even with high-end systems, working with such large assemblies becomes a cumbersome task. This proposal introduces the audience to Express mode—a faster way of working with very large assemblies inside Inventor software. The presentation will cover many topics, including the concept of large models; behind-the-scenes look at the architecture of Express Mode functionality; workflows involving viewing and editing of models using Express Mode; the pros and cons of using Design Views versus level of development (LOD); the creating and updating of drawing views; the optimization of model design for performance and productivity; and hands-on workflows with real examples.

In this class, we examine some of the methods to better define our models using design techniques that follow the Top-Down Design philosophy. We cover some of the most popular and useful methods of assembly modeling, including multi-body parts, layout assemblies, and adaptive assemblies and parts. These powerful models can adapt to design changes easily and save hours of part editing and manipulation. By focusing on the relationships between parts in the assemblies, we can remove the need to modify each part independently.

The new Model States functionality introduced in Inventor 2022 software has many uses within your Inventor design files. It was introduced as a replacement for the pre-2022 Level of Detail assembly functionality, and also provides an alternative to the iPart and iAssembly functionality. This class will begin by discussing the uses of Model States, from their role in creating component design configurations to improving retrieval times and performance when working with a large assembly. You will also learn how to create Model States in both part and assembly files, and then how to maximize these files in your drawings and presentation files to document their design.

In this 60-minute instructional demo, we will examine how to use Inventor software and Configurator 360 software to create parametric assembly models where the components cannot be predicted in advance, hence the inability of iLogic plus suppression to solve the problem. Airport projects don’t fit into the typical AutoCAD Civil 3D software corridor workflows. And yet airfield designers require Building Information Modeling (BIM) workflows just as much as, if not more than, conventional road designers. Designs have tighter tolerances, quantities are larger, and cross sections more complex. The challenge is in utilizing creative and sometimes unconventional corridor modeling methods, as well as configuring AutoCAD Civil 3D software appropriately. Led by a civil engineer with professional aviation design experience in AutoCAD Civil 3D software, this class will cover advanced strategies for modeling aviation projects with Corridors. We’ll look at unique assemblies, including the use of “reverse assembly modeling,” complex targeting, and atypical corridor baselines to model portions of runways, taxiways, intersections, and aprons.
