Upgrading the database with InfoWorks ICM

Upgrade a database to work with the latest version of ICM.


Step-by-step guide

When first creating a database, the version is specified. By default, the database version matching the instance of ICM is selected. When installing a new version of ICM, a database may need to be updated before it can be opened or before new features are accessible.

IMPORTANT: Database versions are backward compatible only. Before upgrading a workgroup database, it is best practice to create a backup. Also, to prepare for a cloud or workgroup upgrade, ensure that the new version of ICM is available to everyone. After upgrading, the database cannot be opened using an older version of ICM.

To update a database:

  1. From the File menu, select Database update > Update database.

  1. In the Open Workgroup Database dialog box, enter the Server name.
  2. Click Connect.
  3. Expand the Group drop-down and select the group.
  4. Expand the Database drop-down and select the database.
  5. Expand the Update to drop-down and select the desired version.
  6. Click OK.

  1. In the confirmation popup, click Yes.

To update a transportable database .icmt file:

  1. In the File > Database update menu, select Update transportable database.
  2. Click Browse.

  1. Navigate to and select the .icmt file.
  2. Click Open.

To update an older version database, while connected to the database:

  1. Select Update database to current version.

A notification popup stating the importance of ensuring the database is backed up before upgrading, in case it needs to be restored.

  1. Click Yes to confirm.

Note: No other users should be connected to the database during the upgrade process.
