Configure local folder locations

Identify and change local folder locations.

Step-by-step guide

Local folders are directories where working copies of files are stored. In general, changing the location of these folders is not recommended, as they should be stored on a local drive attached to the physical machine running InfoWorks ICM. However, they can be changed, if needed.

To access these folders:

  1. From the menu bar, select Tools > Options.
  2. In the Options dialog box, click the Local Folders tab.

The InfoWorks ICM Options dialog box displaying the Local Folders tab.

The Working Folder contains uncommitted versions of the network model on your computer, and should never be stored on a shared location, such as a network drive or server.

As a network model is edited by a user, changes are stored locally, where only the user can access them. Once these changes are committed, they are saved to the database, which shares them with all users.

If a user is working on many different networks or on large model networks, data from earlier versions can build up in the working folder. ICM provides a cleanup tool to remove these unused files from a specific database.

  1. To use this tool, click Clean unused files from the folder for this database.

Using the cleanup tool removes only the files with data that is duplicated in the database, and leaves any files that represent uncommitted changes.

  1. From the drop-down, switch to the Results Folder.

The Options dialog box displaying the Local Folders tab, with the drop-down set to Results Folder and called out.

The Results Folder stores simulation results. By default, results are stored in the Local Results Folder on the local machine, accessible only by the user. However, since results files can take up a lot of space, modeling machines may use an additional physical drive to store local results. In this case, the location of the local results folder may be changed.

NOTE: External USB drives are not recommended, as they can lead to performance issues or corruption of results files, due to the volume of data and the potential for connection interruption. Results to be shared with all users should be stored on a server using the remote results root.
