Introduction to bridge design
Design firms now have a way to work more collaboratively on bridge designs to meet the urgent need for bridge design and maintenance. Bringing together five of our design tools — Autodesk InfraWorks, Autodesk Civil 3D, Autodesk Revit, Autodesk Structural Bridge Design and Autodesk Inventor — the bridge design workflow connects the road design, bridge design, fabrication and documentations team into one project model.
Course overview
Design firms now have a way to work more collaboratively on bridge designs to meet the urgent need for bridge design and maintenance. Bringing together five of our design tools – Autodesk InfraWorks, Autodesk Civil 3D, Autodesk Revit, Autodesk Structural Bridge Design and Autodesk Inventor – the bridge design workflow connects the road design, bridge design, fabrication and documentations team into one project model.
Using this solution, your teams learn model authoring for concept design and detailed design to determine the best route and location for a bridge using InfraWorks and Civil 3D. During the detailed design phase, the bridge designer and CAD technician take advantage of Inventor to build custom bridge parts. Next the team learns how to do quantification and scheduling in Revit and Civil 3D to ensure the bridge stays within the project budget. The structural engineers learn how to analyze the bridge and document both the bridge and road designs.
Course outline
Establish the existing conditions model in InfraWorks
At the conceptual design phase, both the road designer and bridge designer work inside InfraWorks to identify the best routes for a new road and the location of any bridges. InfraWorks helps you create a model of the existing environment within a matter of minutes using the Model Builder. This automatically brings in roads, waterways, ground imagery, buildings and more. Then, you can enhance the model with additional GIS data and run some initial analysis for constructability using Themes and Styles.

Create custom bridge parts in Inventor
Parametric sketching in Inventor makes it easy to modify models. If you will be making many components with similar geometry, you can accelerate the process by creating templates that include the parameters you require in a template.
Module outline
- Create sketches using parameters included in a template
- Develop the sketches required for the design
- Test the model parameters using a form
- Export Data for use in InfraWorks

Incorporate parametric bridge parts from Inventor
Moving from one Autodesk software to another for the design should not require starting over from scratch. In this module, you learn how to incorporate custom bridge parts in InfraWorks that were created in Inventor.
Module outline
- Incorporate customer bridge parts from Inventor

Setting Up Revit and Adding Reinforcing
Adding rebar to a bridge design is most efficiently done in Revit. In this module, you learn how to reinforce bridge piers in Revit. Then, you configure your visibility graphics to clearly see the rebar that was placed.
Module outline
- Set up the correct levels in Revit
- Add pier reinforcing
- Configure visibility graphics

Documenting and Scheduling Bridge Components
Revit is used for bridge design documentation. Here you can tag, dimension, detail and schedule the bridge components. The advantage of exporting the bridge to Revit is that if the InfraWorks model updates, anyone who has the bridge open in Revit will receive a notification that a sync is required. Learn how to add tags and schedules for documenting the design.
Module outline
- Tag bridge elements.
- Create a pier schedule.
- Create a pier foundation schedule.
